A check-engine light, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, is not — a steady (not flashing) check-engine light almost always means you can finish your drive and deal with it that week. People panic over the harmless stuff and ignore the dangerous stuff, and it should be the other way around.
Stop-now means stop now: temp gauge in the red, brake pedal to the floor, oil light on, steam from the hood, a flashing check-engine light. Those can total an engine or put you in a wall. Pull over and call. The stuff you can usually keep driving on for a bit: a steady check-engine light, a worn-but-working A/C, a small slow leak you're topping up. Still get it looked at — but you're not stranded.
And here's the honest part most won't say out loud: I would rather tell you to pull over and shut it off for free than sell you a tow and a repair you didn't actually need. If your car genuinely needs a tow and a shop — a major internal transmission failure, a seized engine, real frame or collision damage — I'll say that plainly. I'm not going to come out and pretend I can fix on a roadside something that belongs on a lift. Honest triage is the whole value here. If it doesn't fix the problem, you don't pay full price.
